MBI’s Palmer vies for music educator award

Scott Palmer, the brass caption supervisor for Minnesota Brass, is among nearly 300 quarterfinalists to win the 2017 Music Educator Award presented by the Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation.

Palmer, a band director at Eden Prairie High School, is one of five Minnesota music educators in contention for the prestigious award. The others are Eric Songer (Chaska Middle School, West Chaska), Peter Meyer (St. Cloud State University), Geneva Fitzsimonds (South View Middle School, Edina) and Adrian Davis (Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis). He also is on the brass instructional staff with California’s Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps.

The music educator of the year and nine other finalists will receive cash honorariums supported by the GRAMMY Foundation’s Education Champions: Converse, Disney Performing Arts, the Ford Motor Co. Fund and Journeys. Additionally, the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the NAMM Foundation and the National Education Association support the program through outreach to their constituencies.

Palmer is among 290 music teachers from 41 states have reached the quarterfinals. More than 3,300 initial nominations were submitted from all 50 states. The award will be presented during GRAMMY Week 2017.

Color Guard and Front Line Auditions April 20 (no rehearsal April 13)

Attention all passengers!  Minnesota Brass’s 2016 production, Now Boarding is preparing for take off and we’re looking to fill our last few seats.

Wednesday evening, April 20 auditions for the color guard and front line ensemble will take place at Brooklyn Center High School starting at 6:30 p.m.  RSVP today and let us know you’re planning to soar this summer.

There is NO REHEARSAL for any section on April 13.

Rehearsal starts at 6:30 but plan to arrive between 6 and 6:30 to get registered and get equipment. (If you haven’t already paid a 2016 audition fee to any Minnesota Brass ensemble, you will also pay your $25 audition fee when you register.) Check out these important details about Wednesday’s rehearsal and audition schedule:
  • Brooklyn Center High School is located at 6500 Humbold Ave. North in Brooklyn Center
  • Registration opens at 6 and rehearsal starts promptly at 6:30.  Rehearsal ends at 10 p.m.
  • Please enter through Door 23–the door closest to the large parking lots.
  • Bring a friend!  We will welcome walk-ins so feel free to invite others or forward this note.
  • Color Guard auditionees:  You’ll be moving and spinning so dress ready to move!
  • Positions in the horn line and battery are currently full.  However, we are accepting a select group of individuals to serve as alternates this season if a spot opens up.  Please email us (or simply stop by a Wednesday rehearsal) if you’d like to be considered for an alternate role.

Happy Birthday, Pharrell Williams!

Come on, get “Happy” and help us celebrate Pharrell Williams’ birthday with a round of Coach Purse Bingo on Tuesday, April 5. And what could make you happier than to win a Coach designer purse at Joe Senser’s Restaurant and Sports Theater (2350 Cleveland Ave. N., Roseville) for another edition of Coach Purse Bingo.

The action starts at 6:30 p.m. Cards cost $20 for the first set of six cards and $4 for an additional set of three cards. You’ll play 10 different bingo games and have a shot at winning one of a variety of Coach designer purses as prizes. The more people who play, the bigger and more expensive the prizes! (You must be 18 or older to play.)

So grab a pal and come out and join Minnesota Brass for an evening of exciting bingo. The restaurant and bar are open, as is the pull tab window, and there’s plenty of video entertainment to keep you entertained between games. And all proceeds benefit Minnesota Brass. Minnesota Brass At A Glance

Sometimes we get so excited about all the great things going on in the world of Minnesota Brass, we forget that new people are visiting and learning about us every day!  To help introduce new fans, potential new members and the generally curious about what it is the drum corps does, we’ve created a new Quick Guide with great information about who we are and what we do.  Feel free to share with others and spread the word.

The drum corps’ next rehearsal is Wednesday, February 17 at 6:30 p.m. for percussion and brass.  We rehearse at Brooklyn Center High School.  Color Guard auditions are scheduled to begin in April, after the WGI World Championships!
