The 2026 MBI Drum And Bugle Corps Show Reveal Is Here!

By | Drum & Bugle Corps | No Comments

The Oak – An 80th Anniversary Production

MB’s 2026 production takes audiences on a journey through the life of an oak tree – beginning with its roots, rising through the strength of the trunk, and extending outward as branches bud with new leaves. Through this imagery, MBI embodies the resilience, vitality, and enduring presence of the mighty oak. Symbolically, the 80th wedding anniversary is traditionally known as the Oak Anniversary, symbolizing strength, longevity, and deep-rooted legacy.

The Oak – A Closer Look

The opener sets the scene by examining the ethereal roots of the tree. The repetitive nature of the music represents the foundation of the tree, where all things start – where resilience is born, and generations take hold, harkening back to where we’ve come from. The stage begins with backdrops looking through the canopy of our Oak Tree.

The trunk of the tree represents strength, power, and stability, which “Golden Hour” audibly depicts through strong chords and space. The trunk is also representative of the longevity of a tree as it stands the test of time through difficult tribulations, much like the drum corps has endured. The set begins to change, and the backdrops become individual stages to elevate the corps.

The third part of our show becomes rhythmically playful, adventurous, and audacious representing the branches of the Oak Tree which also allude to connectivity and can be related to mapping ancestry. Wooden sounds can be heard throughout this portion of the show and physical wooden props begin to outline the tree itself.

The leaves symbolize the growth, future, and life-giving energy of the Oak Tree as they absorb sunlight for nourishment. The lyrics of Iris reflect a deep and enduring love, much like the meaning behind an Oak Anniversary. Looking ahead to the next 80 years of MBI’s history, the corps embodies the strength and majesty of the Oak Tree, while vibrant green flags emerge to create a flourishing canopy overhead.

Inside AMPED! Effects for band instruments

By | Winds | No Comments

We get a lot of questions about how we “AMPED!” our hornline for the 2025 MBI Winds show. Here’s an inside look at our technical journey when searching for those tones…

Pickups

This experiment started in the 2024 season at one rehearsal spot – a church that has a bunch of guitar amps. We discovered a product called PiezoBarrel and I bought one to try out. Originally designed for clarinet (hence the name), this piezoelectric pickup works by picking up sound from the inside of the instrument. For clarinet, they sell a pre-fabbed barrel that has the pickup adapter pre-installed. Sabrina, our clarinetist, provided some wild examples of what it would sound like with generated harmonies from a Boss PS-6 Harmonist pedal.
